Procalcitonin Guided Therapy and How Rapid Diagnostics Support Antimicrobial Stewardship
Tuesday, August 1 at 7:00 am
Speakers: Dr. George Sakoulis and Dr. John Hurst
This symposium will explore two aspects of antimicrobial stewardship; new PCT Guided Therapy and Rapid Diagnostics.
PCT Guided Therapy is the application of procalcitonin levels to aid in initiation and monitoring of treatment response in bacterial infections and the support of antibiotic stewardship. Case studies will illustrate how measuring procalcitonin levels can aid in adjusting medical care to optimize decisions in patient management and reduce patient exposure to antibiotics. The second part of the talk will explore how Rapid Diagnostics are pivotal to supporting Antimicrobial Stewardship efforts and the evolution of the role of diagnostics in stewardship.
A Collaborative Antimicrobial Stewardship Program Impact on Patient Care and the Diagnostic Significance of 2-Tier Lyme EIA Algorithm
Wednesday, August 2 at 7:00 am
Speakers: Dr. Lena Prisco and Dr. Mike Broyles
This symposium will explore two topics; CDC evaluation of alternate Lyme testing algorithm and a multidisciplinary team working to improve patient care in a Stewardship Program.
Dr. Prisco will describe the potential diagnostic benefits of using the dissociated VIDAS® Lyme assays in a 2-tier EIA approach versus the standard EIA/Western blot algorithm.
Dr. Broyles will describe his experience of collaboration between the lab, pharmacy, physicians and nursing to improve diagnostic precision when dealing with infection. A case study of the lab and pharmacy role in providing guidance and demonstrating improvement in patient care and antibiotic usage will be presented.
