DURHAM, N.C. (May 22, 2007) — The 2007 Sonnenwirth Award for Leadership in Clinical Microbiology has been awarded to Vickie S. Baselski, Ph.D. The award will be presented by bioMérieux, Inc. at the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) General Meeting awards dinner in Toronto, Canada on May 22. Dr. Baselski will present a paper titled “Private Matters–Public Affairs.”

The bioMérieux Sonnenwirth Award is presented to an exceptional microbiologist who promotes leadership in the field of clinical microbiology. Developed as a tribute to Alexander Sonnenwirth, Ph.D., the award honors an individual whose dedication to ASM and promotion of innovation in clinical laboratory science are reminiscent of the award’s namesake. Presented by ASM and sponsored by bioMérieux since 1986, the award recognizes the advancement of clinical microbiology as a profession.

Dr. Baselski’s long and productive career has led her to her current role as a professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. She has earned a reputation as an advocate for the role of laboratory scientists in positions of responsibility in clinical microbiology. Dr. Baselski is regarded as the country’s foremost authority with regard to reimbursement issues related to clinical microbiology and serves as a resource for laboratories across the country.

As a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, Dr. Baselski previously received the William H. Ewing Award from the Southern Association for Clinical Microbiology and the S.E. Sulkin Award, presented by the Texas Branch of ASM. She has held positions as Technical Director of Clinical Microbiology at Regional Medical Center, Bowld Hospital and Memphis Pathology Laboratory.  Additionally, Dr. Baselski served as clinical microbiology consultant to the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department laboratories.

Dr. Baselski received her B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Microbiology from the University of Texas, Austin. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship in public health and medical laboratory microbiology at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Dr. Baselski was nominated by Alice S.
