GENE-UP® Cronobacter

Vulnerable Consumers Require Uncompromising Quality Control

Product safety is the number one concern in dairy and infant formula production. Detecting and determining the source of any potential pathogens is critical to protecting your customers—and your company’s reputation.

Now available from the microbiology experts at bioMérieux, the Cronobacter spp. test kit for GENE-UP—a real-time PCR pathogen detection system that delivers rapid results you can count on.

GENE-UP Cronobacter is a qualitative assay based on real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for the detection of Cronobacter in human food products and environmental production samples.

Cronobacter spp. is a neonatal pathogen associated with dehydrated powdered infant formula (PIF). This organism has been isolated from various food products as well as environmental sources, such as water and soil.1 It has been found in foods, including milk powder, chocolate, cereal, spices and pasta.

It is also an occasional contaminant of dehydrated foods. In neonates it can cause rare, but life-threatening forms of neonatal meningitis (10-55% fatality), septicemia, necrotizing enterocolitis (40-80% fatality) and necrotizing meningo-encephalitis.2

The GENE-UP Cronobacter kit is to be used with the GENE-UP Thermocycler. The GENE-UP Cronobacter kit contains all of the necessary components for PCR, including sample-specific primers and probes and an internal amplification control.

The GENE-UP Cronobacter kit provides the following benefits:

  • Next day result + Single enrichment (Buffered Peptone Water)
  • Powdered milk / ingredients / environmental samples
  • Up to 375g for powdered milk
  • Same PCR run as TOP 4 kits (Salmonella, Listeria spp., Listeria monocytogenes & E.coli O157:H7)
  • Ready-to-use freeze dried pellet master mix format
  • Confirmation media solutions available
  • Content of the kit: 192 tests

Plus all the simplicity and flexibility the GENE-UP molecular platform has to offer:

  • An easy-to-use workflow – with a 5 minute generic lysis using patented “Magic Cap”
  • A wide range of throughput levels – via standardized workflow and protocols
  • The peace of mind that comes from making confident decisions – due to the high specificity of primers and probes in FRET technology and melt analysis; plus internal control in every test
  • An intuitive interface
  • An open platform for maximum flexibility

ISO 16140/ANFOR validated & AOAC validations in progress.

Matrix protocols available but not limited to:

  • Infant formulas (liquids and powders) without probiotics (up to 25 g or 25 mL), including or not cereals
  • Infant formulas (liquids and powders) containing probiotics (up to 25 g or 25 mL), including or not cereals
  • Powdered infant formulas with or without probiotics (up to 375 g), including or not cereals
  • Environmental samples including surfaces (up to 25 g or 25 mL)

The GENE-UP Cronobacter kit has been evaluated on a large number of matrices. However, given the wide variety of products and manufacturing procedures, it is recommended to check that the composition of the matrices tested does not affect the reliability of GENE-UP results.
