Durham, NC – An article, published on November 15, 2019 in the Triangle Business Journal, discussed the impact of the new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Rules on antimicrobial resistance, hospital antimicrobial stewardship programs, and bioMérieux, Inc. bioMérieux’s John Hurst, PharmD, BCPS-AQ ID, Senior Director, Antimicrobial Stewardship, offered perspective on the importance of diagnostics in antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP).

"A huge part of ASPs is diagnostics," Dr. Hurst said to the Triangle Business Journal. "We really rely on the data that diagnostics provide."

Last year, bioMérieux was chosen to pa rtner with CMS to help lead the fight against antimicrobial resistance. The new CMS rules require that hospitals have antimicrobial stewardship programs that adhere to a nationally recognized standard, such as CDC’s Core Elements, Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), and American Society for Health Systems Pharmacists.

Dr. Hurst noted in his interview, "This is going to push a whole lot of hospitals into adoption of ASPs. Usually, if you accept Medicare and Medicaid patients, that's usually half of your payer mix – so you're very vested in receiving that reimbursement."
