Healthcare Associated Infections

Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) cover both hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infections and any infection associated with a medical or surgical intervention in a healthcare facility (including ambulatory or home setting).

In vitro diagnostic tests can play a significant role in infection control, helping to substantially reduce HAI prevalence and associated costs.

An example of this challenge is C. difficile, which is increasing in incidence and severity. It is associated with antibiotic use, and symptoms range from diarrhea to severe and possibly fatal inflammatory ulcerative colitis. Diagnosis is usually made on the basis of toxin A or toxin B detection.

Patients can and do transmit their infections to others in the hospital through contaminated healthcare workers hands or inanimate objects. Eradication of C. difficile in the hospital environment is difficult, as the organism is resistant to many cleaning agents and can live on dry surfaces for a long period of time.

bioMérieux is a worldwide leader in the fight against healthcare-associated infections with one of the most complete offerings on the market – detection of multi-resistant bacteria (MRSA, ESBL, VRE), identification and detection of resistance phenotypes, microbial genotyping and surveillance software.

HAI Series

bioMérieux is sponsoring a Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) series to educate the industry on prevention, surveillance and intervention tools that can help in the fight against We aim to increase awareness of aspects and challenges surrounding healthcare-associated infections and the implementation of processes that can assist in their overall reduction. A main objective for these regional workshops is to sponsor local experts and enable them to communicate best practices implemented at their respective facilities wherein attendees can consider applying some of the elements shared at their own institutions.

Healthcare-associated infections will continue to be a major challenge and this area will likely experience increasing pressures related to regulatory mandates and reduction in reimbursement from Medicare and other payers. As a partner with the microbiology laboratory for over 40 years, bioMérieux is committed to helping healthcare institutions meet these challenges. In addition to offering novel products delivering high value, we believe that sponsorship of education is a critical element in addressing this key public health issue.
